Dog Disease Symptoms,Can It Be Lyme’s?

One of the most frustrating diseases that your dog is at risk for is lyme’s disease. It is caused when your dog is bitten by a tick that is a carrier. Most often, it is in the spring, summer, and early fall that you have to be aware of these nasty creatures. However, the most important thing you can do is understand the lyme’s disease symptoms in dogs, so you can help your dog as quickly as possible.

Generally, the main lyme’s disease symptoms in dogs are fever, loss of their appetite, dehydration, fatigue, and, possibly, swollen lymph nodes. Should you see any of the signs in your dog, you should immediately check their body for any ticks, as these symptoms can start within forty-eight hours after being bitten by a tick. If one is discovered, you will need to take your dog to the veterinarian immediately.

Should your dog’s symptoms go ignored, your dog could become very ill. In many cases, left untreated, it could lead to kidney failure and death. In other cases, a serious infection could set in. The fact is that lyme’s disease is just as serious for a dog as it is for a human.

The best way to prevent this from happening is to try and prevent ticks from getting on your dog. Keeping your grass cut short is good, but it will not stop your dog from wandering to other areas. Therefore, they need to be on tick prevention medications.

Every pet owner should be aware of the lyme’s disease symptoms in dogs. Should you find a tick on your dog, remove it and save it in a small container. If your dog starts to show signs of the disease, you can then bring the tick to the vet, as well. They will be able to tell whether it is a tick that could be a carrier or not and will be able to get your dog the treatment it needs quickly.

You and Your Dog’s Weight

Weight problems are not uncommon in our canine companions, and dog owners usually find it difficult to keep their overweight pets in shape. Modern feeding methods can sometimes add extra weight, as well as the many misconceptions owners have about how much and how often they should feed their dogs.

First, you have to consider how much food your pet actually requires. To fully comprehend our canine friends’ needs, we have to look at how wild dogs survive and what they eat.

In the wild, dogs live on rabbits, rodents, berries, and by scavenging. They only eat once a day on average, sometimes two to three days between meals. Domestic dogs’ systems are built on this same pattern of eating.

If we feed our dogs every day, they will store fat for lean times. However, if there is no lean time, they will only get fatter and fatter. Hence, feeding them two to three times a day will lead to obesity.

An adult dog needs only one average size meal per day, and ideally should completely abstain from food one day per week to help burn excess fat. Canines should not be given sweets as these will only increase their risk of obesity.

Grown dogs should not be given cow’s milk, as it is far too rich and can cause gastric issues. However, if you would still like to give your dog some milk, go for the special brands of dog milk, which can be bought at supermarkets. If your pet is overweight, be aware of how much you give him.

Several folks believe that desexing causes obesity in dogs. This is not completely true, since it is only the animal’s interest in food that increases after desexing. Owners of desexed canines should keep their pets’ food intake the same as before. Instead, you can offer raw bones, which will satisfy even the hungriest dog without adding any fat.

Various brands of diet dog food, which can help your pooch lose weight, are also available. Bear in mind that dogs that are the right weight tend to live longer and have a more active and enjoyable life.

The positives and negatives of re-homing a rescue dog.

Before you commit to spending hundreds of pounds on a pedigree puppy, take the time to consider an alternative- re-homing a rescue dog.

Every year around 100,000 dogs are abandoned in the UK. Contrary to popular belief, very few of these dogs are ‘problem dogs’. Most have been abandoned due to their families moving, new babys, death of an owner and other domestic problems- none of which are the dogs fault.

There are many benefits to rescue dogs. Most are older than six months old so they have been house trained and no longer chew everything in sight and some have even been trained. Many rescue centres also insist that their dogs are neutered and vaccinated before they leave the home so this is another worry taken off your mind.

Things you should consider:

Most rescue homes will want to do a home check before they let you take a dog. Gone are the days when they would let you take a dog as long as you could prove that you had a dog bed and a can of dog food. You must be able to prove that you are able to exercise your dog regularly, have an adequate home and garden and will want to see if you have any other pets. They will also take into consideration the character of the dog and whether it fits in with your lifestyle- there is no point in adopting a dog that hates children if you have three kids for example.

Some dogs may well have been abused or mistreated. As such they may have abandonment issues, may be nervous, aggressive or have medical issues. As a potential owner you must be willing and able to deal with these problems and be prepared to give your dog a lot of love and patience.

The reward for dealing with this initial bureaucracy is often the most fun, beautiful, happy, healthy dog that you could ever wish for, plus the warm glow of knowing that you have given an unwanted dog a new home.

For more information about rescue centres either ask your local pet supplies store or contact one of the main rescue centres such as The Dogs Trust, The RSPCA or the Blue Cross.

Finally, if you are stuck on having a particular breed of dog, why not consider looking at pedigree rescue sites. Most breeds have them (a list of some of them can be seen on ‘The dog rescue pages’) and they can provide you with a wealth of breed specific information as well as a gorgeous new pet.

Is Your Dog Safe In An Auto Accident?

This is the story how Toby met a policeman.

One day, my car was rear ended at a very busy intersection near my home. The other driver was a very young man, only sixteen years old. He was very sweet, and had genuine tears for fear he had hurt me. As a matter of fact, he had reason to cry because he had knocked me a full two car lengths ahead, and his 1971 VW Classic Rabbit, well, it would have to be picked up in paper sacks! The back end of my nearly new Honda laid in the middle of the street, also in pitiful pieces. He had no insurance.

I was shaking and crying when I called 911. I’m ashamed to say that when they answered, I could only tell them where I was, but I had difficulty telling them my name. They asked me to spell it, and I couldn’t even say my difficult name, let alone spell it. I think that’s why they sent an ambulance. I then handed my cell to my new friend so he could call his mother.

The ambulance got there first. They were giving me oxygen and doing the usual agenda when the law arrived. I was all right, and I knew it by this time, but the medics were making sure and they asked me to stay where I was and let the law “do their job”. So I stayed where I was.

The policeman was a tall, big man, with a ‘no nonsense’ kind of a face; all business. He was the kind that you would hoped to heaven would be on your side. He asked me for my driver’s license and proof of insurance. I started stammering, again, but managed to tell him that they were in my purse in the front seat of my car. Then I managed to tell him that I had two dogs in there, and when I left them they were fairly calm, but I didn’t know how they were now. I couldn’t guarantee it.

“How big are they?”

“Well, the fat one is 23 pounds, and will possible lick your hand, if he is not too upset. The other dog weighs 10 pounds, and is not friendly.”

He snickered. I could hear him snicker!

As he turned away, he said, “No problem”.

I then went back to the business at hand, letting the law “do their job”.

Soon after, the ambulance driver tapped me on the shoulder and said, “Look over there!”

He was pointing in the direction of my car.

The officer had a very, very long stick in his hand and was trying to get my purse out of the front seat. My little dog, Toby, was up on the back of the seat, just waiting for him to make his fatal move. Her little ears were laid back, her hackles were raised and she was crouched ready to spring. Her teeth were bared and she was growling so loud I could hear her as far away as I was sitting.

My little spotted heathen had waited her whole life long for an opportunity like this!

But that wasn’t the only reason the policeman’s face was red. He was embarrassed. As people will do, a crowd gathered to watch this show, and they were enjoying it immensely!! They were stopping to watch. Several were telling Toby, “Stick to your guns, little dog!” Some were asking the law if he was going to arrest her, and one man driving by, hung out his car window and shouted, “CALL FOR A BACK UP!”

Soon after, the policeman walked over to me and asked, “Lady, how much did you say that dog weighs?”

“She weighs 10 pounds. Did she bite you?”

“Yes she did, in two places!” He showed me his hand and forearm. It looked ugly! It really did. Of course, I told him how sorry I was, in all sincerity.

“Has she had her shots?”

I felt PANIC, but I told him the name of our veterinarian, and that she had just received all of her shots. Fortunately, that was the truth, and she also had her two year license. Thank the Lord, we were legal.

On our way home, I bought Toby a pork chop.

A few days later, I received a letter in the mail from the County Health Department, informing me that they had checked Toby for a previous record and had found her ‘clean’. At the bottom of the page, someone had drawn a smiley face and had written, “Have a nice day”. I was so relieved. I bought Toby another pork chop.

I’m getting old, and Toby is getting old too. I have visions in my mind of Toby and me growing old together, with me going on welfare trying to keep Toby in pork chops. I see her growling at every squad car she sees. I know she will never forget THAT policeman.

But she and I will be very happy together, I don’t have a doubt.

Keeping a Clean (Fish-Friendly) Home

My mom has taught me many things over the years, not the least of which is the importance of having a clean house. Not just because it looks nice-but because it helps keep you from getting sick! Not surprisingly, Mom's advice translates to fish homes, too. Good fish aquarium maintenance doesn't have to be a huge time commitment-it's mainly a little elbow grease and a lot of common sense.

Here are some simple tips to keep your fish happy and healthy:

Keep the water clean. Water is a fish's air, and when it isn't clean it's very difficult for them to get the oxygen they need. A water filtration system helps keep it the water pure on a day-to-day basis, but to really ensure a good environment for your fish, change 20% of the aquarium's water twice a week.

Clean the tank monthly. Once a month, do a complete deep-clean of your aquarium. Completely replace the water, wash the gravel, change the filter and thoroughly clean every inch of the tank. Do not use soap or detergent to clean the tank-hot water works just fine and won't make your fish sick.

Check the temperature and pH regularly. Too much fluctuation in water temperature can be very stressful for fish. Make sure your aquarium is in a stable place away from A/C vents or direct sunlight. Test the pH of the water when you're doing your twice-a-week replacement, and if it's off, you can add chemicals to balance it (you can find them at your local pet store).

Watch your fish. If your fish are sick, they'll show it. Watch for patches on their scales, sliminess, clamped fins, erratic behavior...just about anything that doesn't look normal. If you have a fish you think is sick, quarantine it while you figure out what's wrong with it. There are a lot of good websites out there to help diagnose fish diseases and appropriate treatments. And of course, be sure to feed your fish regularly!

Finally, don't get suckered into buying expensive chemicals or treatments that you really don't need. The best way to keep your tank clean and well-maintained is by doing it yourself using the steps above.

Boating with man's best friend

Taking along man's best friend on your boating trip could be a great adventure for both you and him/her. For your furry friend boating is like riding in his dream convertible with a blast of sun and fresh air from all directions. Nose in the air, ears blowing in the wind and his/her favorite people; what could be better!

Most all dogs have mastered the famous "Doggie Paddle" but it's always important to stay as safe as possible. Your dog should always wear a life jacket when both in and near the water. That holds true even for breeds of dogs that traditionally love the water and take to swimming quite easily. Such breeds include the following: American Water Spaniel, Barbet, Boykin Spaniel, Bedlington Terrier, Cantabrian Water Dog, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Curly Coated Retriever, Epagneul Pont-Audemer, Flat-Coated Retriever, Golden Retriever, Irish Water Spaniel, Labrador Retriever, Lagotto Romagnolo (a.k.a Italian Water Dog), Münsterländer (large and small), Nova Scotia Duck Toller, Otterhound, Portuguese Water Dog, Spanish Water Dog, Standard Poodle, Newfoundland , Puli, Wetterhound

When taking your dog on water related outings it's important to keep the following five items in mind.

• A towel just for your dog

• A shirt or sweater made out of water-resistant material

• A non - spill water bowl and lots of fresh bottled to put in it

• A pooper-scooper and a trash bag or two

• A life jacket for your dog

Another tip to consider is shade for your friend. Even though your dog may have many opportunities to jump into the water, it's important he/she has a cool relaxing place for resting. Boat surfaces, such as fiberglass, can get extremely hot in the sun. Dogs absorb heat through the pads on their feet so be sure to protect them. Your dog will surely be enjoying himself/herself so much that excitement could hide the fact he/she is overheated.

Now that you have most everything covered pick the perfect day to go have that amazing adventure with your whole family! Always keeping safety first, your dog is bound to have the time of his/her life. Enjoy your trip!

Learn how to Put an end to The Causes of Aggressive Behavior in Dogs

Dog aggression can begin as young as about six weeks of age, a crucial age when a puppy should be socialized to many other dogs and supplied the necessary training that keeps them from biting on other people. This phase of socialization will last till the puppy turns fourteen weeks of age and can increase further beyond that.

This indicates a number of things. First, do not take a pup outside of its litter prior to 8 weeks of age. Never use severe discipline with the new puppy in between 8 and 10 weeks and be sure the puppy is very softly dealt with in that time frame. Hitting, yelling and other hard punitive measures at a young age can easily breed aggressive behavior within dogs as time passes.

Your pet will need to have been properly socialized together with people and also other dogs as soon as your dog got to fourteen weeks to stop any future aggression problems.

Actual aggression can be brought about from several factors. Inheritance along with genes are certainly reasons - some breeds can certainly be far more aggressive than the others - however it's in no way a hard fast rule. Additionally, dogs which have never been neutered or spayed tend to be at risk from aggressive behaviors.

By far, however, the key factor in creating aggressive tendencies in dogs is environment. A dog that has terrible living conditions, harsh owners, zero socializing, or that's terrified or assaulted by a different dog is far more likely to be aggressive as it ages.

Aggression can build from the need to create a pack pecking order. Biting, posturing, along with other aggressive tendencies in many cases are the effect of a dog testing to get dominance. You will need to create dominance at a young age and maintain that role throughout the dog's adolescence to ensure it won't get a chance to take control over the family unit.

Curtailing and Managing Aggressive Behavior in Pet dogs

When your pet dog exhibits aggressive behavior after 14 months old, when it has hit sexual maturity, particularly after it has been nuetered altered, make sure you address the case right away. First, ensure you established yourself as the pack leader. Don't reward the dog for aggressive behavior, even if it is fearful (particularly in this case).

Train your pet to respond to your instructions, control feeding and walking time, and make certain the dog has got a strong alpha dog inside your home. When you defer towards dog or allow it to take liberties at home, it is going to present stronger aggression toward others.

In case your pet dog is defensive-aggressive, it's possibly that they strike out at a person in fear. These dogs might possibly not have been adequately socialized. Keep them faraway from young children (which they may see as direct threats) and attend a dog training program or behaviorist who can gradually adapt your pet to a social atmosphere.

Aggressive behavior in your dog has become a concern that a great many puppy owners have, but it could in fact be managed, even as the dog gets older. If your aggression ever advances to violence, consider employing a skilled professional to intercede before somebody gets harmed and your pet dog will be held accountable.

Keeping Dogs in a Recession

We have all done it, gone out shopping or seen something we like and we buy it disregarding the cost of keeping it and especially in a recession.

Why do we do it?

Because the urge to own what we like is greater than the urge to be sensible.

That is okay if it is an object we can stick in a shed or outhouse and forget it for a while , but if the object is a living breathing Dog then we are in trouble. That is all about commitment for the next ten to fifteen years.

“Oh no! I didn’t expect that. I’ll take it back,” you quickly retort. Your family disagrees and begs and pleads with you to keep it. eventually against your better judgement to give in.

Everyone is happy, you are happy because you made your family happy. Your family thinks you are great, but underlying this is a sneaking suspicion that you can only just afford the upkeep.

Anyway the years pass and your dog has grown into a large dog, along with a large appetite. Your family is also growing with the added expense that comes with having to buy more expensive clothes, food, equipment ect.

You have been able to just keep your head above water as far as money is concerned and everyone is happy. Then suddenly prices begin to rise and everyone including the government tells you that the country is in a recession and jobs may go. Your not unduly worried, because you know you job is relatively safe.

One morning you get a letter from your bank saying the mortgage repayments are being increased, your wife tells you she needs more money for the shopping, your dog is sick and you take him to the vet. He needs a scan costing over a thousand dollars. Your credit card is taking a bashing. How are you going to pay your debts?

You have to make a terrible decision:

Struggle on and hope things get better financially

Let your dog go and cut some of the expense in one go.

You know that the last decision is going to be unpopular and cause trouble in your family. It can even cause the break up of your marriage. Don’t make hasty decision without exploring all the possibilities. What can you do to cut the cost of keeping a dog?  Here are some suggestions:

Prepare your own food.

Ask friends and family to help look after your dog when you go on holiday.

Don’t let your dog become obese. (Health and extra food issues)

Use alternative veterinary services like the PDSA(UK)  and American Animal Hospital Association in the US.

Do an inventory of where your dogs main expenditure is like food, vets bills, kennelling, grooming, ect.

Try and find cheaper alternative sources for your dogs food without compromising on quality.

Stop buying tip bits for your dog like hide chews( they are expensive) look for alternative there are plenty about.

Stop buying expensive play toys and concentrate on cheaper alternatives.

Do not let dog food manufactures persuade you that you want their new product when your dog is doing okay on the old one.

What ever you decide if you are faced with this situation it takes great strength of character to keep your dog. The only way you can do this is to have the full backing of your family. Without their help and commitment you can have even more problems that just debt.

Remember there are organisations that can help you before making a rash decision. I hope you are never faced with this dilema because it can be heartbreaking.

American Bulldogs – What Every New Owner Must Know?

American Bulldogs are mostly descendants of English Bulldogs, and they were near extinction after World War II. John Summerville is the man who should be given the credit for bringing them back by careful breeding. They are the one who are loved here in America a lot. The breed is known as good hunters and they are one of the breeds that are working. They are very loyal, and thus a good family dog. In addition, these dogs commonly known to be very courageous and gutsy when they have to protect their owners.

Types of Bulldogs

Classic and the standard are the two varieties of the American bulldogs. Standard variety is dogs that have been designated as the Scott. The breed known as Classic is the one that is also called the Bully and another name is Johnson. Although there are many different hybrids with countless combinations of two varieties, the basic characteristics remain the same. The breed standard is short and sturdy and looks very similar to the pit bulls. These dogs are usually white with some red or brindle. They have a short coat, and the nervous system that can be hard or rough to the touch. One has to invest time in cleaning and brushing them on daily basis. Make sure that the brush is stiff. As the jaw is strong these American bull dogs look boxy.

Weight and Size

For those considering bringing home American Bulldogs, it is important to take into account the size and weight of the American bull dogs. On an average the Males are as tall as 27 inches and their weight measures up to125 pounds. On the other hand the Females are 25 inches tall and 100 kilos. The average age of these dogs is 16 years. The variety of English have been raised to help the herd of cattle. Some of its features have been sent to the American variety. Although known to have a strong personality, are fierce and protective as guard dogs, which are also very gentle and get along well with other pets and children in families.

It may be so that the dog is not aware of its own weight and may not even know how strong it is, therefore it is the duty of the owner to train it in this respect. This means when they mingle with the infants in the family they must be aware. If trained well they will abide by your words. One can keep them indoors as they are active there. Just train the American bulldogs perfectly and enjoy their company.

American Bulldogs – Perfect Companion for Families with Children?

American Bulldogs are very popular nowadays all over the world. There are lot of dog lovers who love the strong, well muscled breeds such as Rottweilers and schnauzer. As these dogs are loyal and highly protective they are fit for families.

Features and Personality Traits

Become familiar with the characteristics and personality traits of American Bulldogs as these will help you understand if these dogs are appropriate for your family. These dogs are very lovable, but they can be a bit difficult to train, hard-headed and stubborn at times. When you train them, you will find that they can be very affectionate and loyal, so it is really worth. It is a very intelligent breed, so they will be part of your family. They provide protection and companionship, but you should definitely think twice to bring them home if this is your first time owning a dog. You will need a lot of patience and commitment to train or if you want an animal that is aggressive and provocative and may be simply out of control at times.

Bulldogs with Children

You will have to take extra precaution when choosing an animal as pet if you have children or even infants in the house, because all races are suitable and safe during use. American Bulldogs, fortunately, does not pose a threat to children. It would be important, but to train them well so they will be very careful when they are around babies. Children must also learn to play with pets, so it does not feel threatened or defensive. Children should be encouraged to participate in dog obedience training so that they can familiarize themselves with the controls. When the puppy is well trained, then it will be loyal and affectionate with children and even friendly.

For every family keeping a pet in the house is a great responsibility and something they have to commit to completely. The American Bulldogs are large and heavy, therefore you should also consider this vital aspect when you think running a household with a pet like this. You should consider whether it would be able to handle a dog of this size, and you will be able to spend regular time period. There is also the financial aspect that you have to consider when choosing a pet. Because these dogs are much larger than the average lap dogs, they also tend to eat more. However, if funding is not a problem for your family and American Bulldog can be very nice, friendly, intelligent and loyal animals for the whole family.

The hazardous disease called Lyme can be taken care of with Frontline Plus. A dog owner can start applying the drug once their pooch is over eight weeks. The best thing about Frontline Plus is that being waterproof, it works wonders even when the pet is completely drenched in water, and hence it does not affect any kind of activity of the dog.

After Frontline Plus is applied on the dog, the fleas and ticks get visible which means that the drug is indeed working. The application of the drug makes them hyperactive, making them come out to the coat before they die.

Frontline Plus consists of two strong substances namely Fipronil which is a kind of slow poison on tick and fleas and attacks their central nervous system. The second substance, known as S-Methoprene checks their growth, finally killing them. The drug once administered gets locked in the sebaceous glands of the dogs and keeps on releasing the chemicals in order to get rid of the ticks and fleas. As all medicines and drugs are known to have side effects, even Frontline Plus does react. Hence, it is very important that the dog owner consult the vet before administering the drug to their pooch. For different dogs, the drug reacts in a different manner. Some dogs may experience irritation which can even increase with time, but it is not a case to worry.

No matter how much care you take, ticks and fleas invite themselves to your homes through dogs who love to play in mud. The pests then harm the pets and even make them uncomfortable. Hence, it is advisable to use Frontline Plus regularly to give the pets the best of life for their growing years and prevent reinfestation of the ticks and fleas.

Allergies In Dogs - What Can I Do About Dog Allergies Symptoms?

It is suggested that if you are looking for permanent relief for dog allergies symptoms you need to go see a veterinary dermatologist. Here you can find the cause for sneezing in dogs, general allergies in dogs and most of your dog skin problems.

People medicines such as Benadryl and Claritin will only provide temporary relief of the signs and your dog will still be uncomfortable.

In some cases the dermatologist may be able to make up allergy shots if they find out the cause of your dogs allergies. You should not make any diet changes or treat your pet with any medication without strict guidance from a veterinarian.

Changing the dog's diet without the guidance from a veterinarian can make it more difficult for them to isolate the cause of the allergies. It’s entirely possible that the causes may involve specific foods. This requires an extensive food trial. However it could be environmental agents that are causing your dog allergies symptoms which would require further allergy testing.

On your own you could try hydroxizine or atarax for some relief. Do Not use prednisone, it is not the greatest it's a steroid and have several side effects. You can also try eliminating the normal protein source with another protein like fish or venison. It takes up to 2 to 3 months of a diet change to tell if there is any effect.

Allergic contact dermatitis usually shows up in dogs as a hypersensitivity reaction to particular molecules in your pet's environment. Irritant contact dermatitis happens when the skin is exposed to noxious substances in the environment. The symptoms and biologic mechanisms in these two disease structures are closely similar and are often discussed together.

Allergic contact dermatitis is a rare disease, which occurs when an animal's skin overreacts to certain small molecules in the environment. Substances, which can cause allergic contact dermatitis in dogs include some antibiotics applied to the skin, metals such as nickel, materials like rubber or wool and chemicals such as dyes and carpet deodorizers.

Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when the dog’s skin is exposed to intensely irritating chemicals like the sap in poison ivy or road salt.

What are the symptoms of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis?

Lesions occur on the areas of skin that are sparsely haired and exposed to the offending cause. Areas like the back of the paws, abdomen, muzzle, and lips.

The affected areas are usually very red, have small bumps or blister-like lesions, and itch like crazy. Also in irritant contact dermatitis may occur.

The key to managing these dog allergies symptoms is the obvious removing or restricting of exposure to any allergen or contact irritant in the pet's environment. If your not able to do this, then using fatty acids, antihistamines, biotin, and topical shampoos can at least control the itching.

As a rule, for any pet suspected of having an allergy problem that could include an allergic contact component, we recommend:

Glass or stainless steel food and water bowls, cleaned and rinsed well daily

Hypoallergenic detergents for the pet's bedding

Routine hypoallergenic shampoos for the pet to remove any allergens

Restricting walking to sidewalks or paved surfaces-completely avoiding the grass,

if possible.

Be kind to your pooch!

Hopefully in the not to distant future there will be an easier fix for all allergies in dogs.

Save the Butterflies

Are you sick of rainy days? This so-called July weather? Is it dampening your spirits and killing the social calendar? Is it threatening your species? If the answer to the last question is yes, then you are one of the butterflies that feature in this article, if not then you're like me - just another malcontent, fed up with British weather.

Butterflies are one of the few purely decorative insects you can attract and their variety of colours is astonishing, thus making them a welcome addition to any garden, but, due to last year’s wet summer, and the continuing trend this year, Britain has seen a severe decline in several species of butterfly. As most of us know, water and wings don't mix, particularly where insects are concerned. A heavy rainstorm is comparable to a blitzkrieg from a butterfly’s perspective and all this rotten weather has meant they've been less actively pollinating and breeding.

As such, last week’s article on pond cultivation comes closer to the fore, due to it's role as an insect habitat. The obvious plus is the water source it provides, however, butterflies require peace to flourish, so I'd also suggest a wild patch in your garden that will remain undisturbed by usual garden maintenance and thus provide them with a breeding ground. To this end, you might consider a small nettle patch as this will discourage human contact whilst providing a suitable habitat.

The primary means of enticing butterflies into the garden depends on your planting, because nectar is primarily what will invite them. To ensure the most hospitable environment, you'll want a variety of plants that will provide nectar year round, so it is advised you have a balance of spring bloomers such as Daisies, Dandelions, Pansies and Primroses and to compensate their loss in late summer and autumn, a healthy dose of Marigolds, Knapweed and Lavender. Other examples to really boost your butterfly potential are full sun perennials such as Helenium, which will provide bold colour and a large bulbous landing pad to your guests, Lathyrus which offers a daintier foliage and the bonus for us of scent, and the towers of Verbascum, which will dominate the sky line of a butterfly garden - the air traffic control on your own living airfield.

Shrubs that butterflies love include Buddleia, Hebes and Lilac and certain herbs also attract the insect, due to their scent. These include oregano, thyme and mint.

It is important to remember that your butterfly population will be relative to your gardening variety i.e. the greater the number and mix and plants, the greater the potential for their propagation.

Due to their erratic behaviour, butterfly spotting is no simple task, however, look out in your own gardens for species like the Common Blue with their lilac veined wings and white trim, the flambouyant Peacock with big blue ‘eyes’ on its wings, or the small Tortoiseshell, tiger striped with segmented blue edging, to know just how much your helping their species. Other, threatened, types to watch out for are the toffee coloured Small Skipper, the Ginger Lulworth Skipper, Chalk Hill Blue and the Wall Brown species.

Helpful Information On Pitbulls For Sale

Sale of pit bulls is becoming increasingly difficult, given the current wave of bad press against the violence of dogs. Owners want to get rid of their pets. Add to this the fact that pit bull breeders and kennels report surpluses and supply pit bulls continue to be greater than demand.

There are many websites where you can place your pitbulls for sale and can find various options which are already there on these websites. People who are looking to buy pitbulls register on these websites and get regular updates. On the other hand those who are looking to sell their pit bulls can advertise in online classifieds website like CraigsList and BackPage or in newspapers.

Whenever buying Pitbull, it’s so easy to get carried away and forget to properly examine the dog and the dealer. It is easy to fall in love with the dog, but it’s also important to learn the owner, check to see if they are reliable and the breeder that you buy a good dog, in the end you want a dog that will go healthy with your life and family, and not the cause additional stress. Over recent years we have owned and kept a few animals and, although each time it was easier, there were still things that we missed, and I could have done better.

There are some important things you should know about the breeder. Do they have the breeding history? Whether they are experienced with dogs? Is it only for profit, or they are concerned about their pets? Does the supplier belong to any dog clubs? Whether the seller knew about their Pitbulls? Do they have other Pitbulls and they are healthy looking? They propose to test for acquired Pitbulls, or they are just trying to get rid of them?

In addition there are some important things to check on the dog. The dog should look healthy, not an excuse. Check on the parents, they should look great and enjoyable for you. The dealer must have documents or offer some form of promise. There are so many kennels Pitbull online, some standards and some of them are just breeding fast money and buy the dogs back yard of the seller is not a good idea either, they breed for quantity, not quality. It is necessary to feel the person you are buying from. This will help you find the best puppy that will develop into a good dog that’s right for you.

Chicken Coop Designs - The 6 Elements To Accomplish A Secure And Optimal Chicken Coop

Now you may be planning to create a hen house and want to find out about planning one? This particular write-up will explain almost everything about the crucial elements in chicken coop designs.

Right before you start developing a chicken coop, enough facts towards the design is critical, so that appropriate sanitation and also comfort can be provided towards the chicken.

*Coop Sizing*

The additional chickens you will have, the much bigger the hen house should end up being and it is best to also ensure that that you choose and design a area in which you could effortlessly obtain the meals and liquids to the birds. In the event you believe that you may increase on your flock in the foreseeable future, you must design a big enough coop to support every upcoming arrival.

*Nesting Container*

Likely you are trying to fashion your own coop from one of the several chicken coop designs available. It may possibly or may well not already incorporate nesting boxes. Whether it does not contain nesting boxes, then in this instance, anything you really have to have is a handful of plywood, a hammer as well as nails, and maybe some sandpaper to smooth the four corners out later.

A nesting box is genuinely just it - a very simple common box, commonly about one ft. on all sides. Often for anyone who is constructing your boxes totally from plywood, you add with each other various nesting boxes like a simple unit. Following constructing your nesting boxes, cramm them up with hay or raw wood shavings to keep your hens correct at home.

The nesting box really should be in ways that it is going to present security to the chicken and it need to be also secure and huge enough to help them to lay eggs. Four inches wide will be the suitable depth that this nesting box should contain.

*Waste Management*

The chicken coop must be designed and used in such a manner as that can be very easily effective at wiping out waste and utilize it as manure. Continuing to keep the chicken coop dry, tidy and comfy are some of the most essential issues to work on while planning a chicken house

*Water Resistant*

The hen house portion of one's coop ought to be leak-proof and provide warmth when it gets cool. Some different types of chickens can not tolerate prolonged cold environments. Bantam breeds are specially susceptible to severe environments. Others, such as the Silkies, can usually get chilled by only being drenched. Their feathers are extra hair-like and take in moisture quickly.

*Environment Ventilation*

An additional feature that must be considered as soon as developing chicken coop designs is appropriate ventilation. Chickens, like people today, want oxygen. Chicken poop are certain to get very odiferous so it is very essential for the wellness and overall fitness of one's flock.

*Harmless Supplies*

As soon as your planning to style your chicken coop, you should study as often as possible on the constructing supplies that you might be going to use. Because some might be dangerous on your chickens (as well as the eggs you are going to get hold of). Arsenic for one is in processed timber and may be ingested among the chickens once they peck at the wood. Lead and also aluminum based paints need to be also definitely avoided. Just about anything your hens eat will end up in their eggs and therefore onto your food.

Needless to say these form of design choices can be a little costly, but on the good side you only have to construct it as soon as, and if you're really down into nurturing for your hens and desire to either turn out to be an avid breeder, or make money from marketing eggs, then you have to execute almost everything you're able to ensure your personal fowls survive towards the ripe old age of a minimum of 7.

No-one ever previously says taking good care of chickens was basically quick, but by doing this, you'll be able to guarantee that your choice of life, as well as theirs is going to be a lot simpler for essentially the most part.

Good Designs for Chicken Coops Make All The Difference

Gone are the days of chicken coops being just a simple shed with tar paper as insulation with rickety doors and windows. These days’ designs for chicken coops perpetuate solid, well-built, highly functional coops that look great and last a long time.

I remember the first time I saw a “modern” chicken coop, I was at a friend’s house and he wanted to take me out to see his chickens. I was stunned at how good the coop looked and how well designed it was.

I had raised chickens a long time before and I really didn’t have any good memories about it. The coop I used was there when I bought the house and I guess if I knew how bad the coop was I would have done something about it.

If there wasn’t a skunk or raccoon killing one of my chickens they were dying from the cold. And believe me I tried to fortify the coop, but there were some “secret passages” that I just could find until I gave up on raising chickens and finally tore the building down.

Now the attitude about raising chickens has changed and more emphasis is being placed on the quality of the birds housing. Chickens are fairly self-sustaining if they are given what they need. So to have a successful flock the focus should be, as it is now, on the environment you provide them.

A solid foundation with quality materials like treated lumber help to ensure the coop will keep its integrity and be just as solid as it is now, twenty years from now.

Today chicken coop designs take into account such things as good lighting, ventilation, spacious layouts, and weather tight construction so that you should expect to be able to have a healthy and productive flock.

I’ve been back in the chicken raising fold for over ten years now and with my new modern chicken coop and run and I couldn’t be happier about how things have gone. Because of the great lighting, both natural and artificial, my hens are egg laying machines!

I haven’t had one issue with a predator and I can’t see that I ever will as long as I keep the coop up – which really doesn’t take much with the quality of the construction.

I have the option to add more birds whenever I’m ready for them since my coop is very spacious and can keep up to twenty hens and roosters. Plus I’m able to take advantage of the chicken produced fertilizer and my vegetable garden and my wife’s flowers are reaping the benefits big time!

If you are on the fence about whether or not to raise chickens just let me say that you can’t go wrong if you’ll take your time to find a design that you like and will work for the number of birds you want to keep.

The benefits far outweigh and negatives you may thinking of that would keep you from taking the next step toward fresh eggs, meat and a small level of self-reliance.
